Trout is the common name given to a number of species of freshwater fish belonging to the Salmonidae family, this is the same family as salmon and whitefish. Many different species of trout can be found in northern America, northern Asia and Europe. These fish are usually found in cold, clear streams and lakes, but some species migrate to the sea between spawnings. Trout streams are considered to be complex and delicate environments. Trout are sensitive to any changes in their environment and because of this they have been labeled as an indicator species - habitats with a declining trout population indicate other populations might be threatened as well.
Trout are often served as whole fillets, and are high in protein and low in fat. There are a variety of different ways in which you can prepare trout, including frying, baking, steaming, poaching, grilling or broiling the fish.
